Get to know the humans of Clearpath, what they do and why they chose a career at Clearpath!

Meet Chris, who handles all things marketing for our Research Solutions team.

Q: How did you get into Marketing?

I stumbled into the world of Marketing in a previous job.  It was during a time when new marketing techniques were emerging with the growth of the internet and the digital world.  It was my job to bring the company into the modern age and evolve their marketing strategies. It was all new and exciting – and still is to this day.  The marketing world continues to evolve with technological advances, which is why I find it so interesting.

Q: What drew you to Clearpath?

What drew me to Clearpath was the company culture. I had previously worked for a multi-billion-dollar company with lots of red tape and hierarchy, so I saw start-up culture as really liberating. I had also been following the company for awhile, and thought the technology of self-driving vehicles was really cool. The emerging industry of robotics was really interesting, and I wanted to be a part of a smaller company.

Q: Did you have any prior experience in Robotics?

I had very little experience in robotics, though I did have some prior experience marketing tech products.

Q: What does your team do?

My team promotes Clearpath Robotics products and services, connects with our audiences, and showcases our research robots and their capabilities to the world. To do this we use inbound and outbound marketing strategies, attend international trade shows and conferences, create a solid online presence and develop compelling media.

Q: What does a typical day as a Marketing Specialist look like at Clearpath?

Every day at Clearpath is different. There are so many different aspects of marketing here at Clearpath that no day is ever spent doing the same thing. Some of our tasks include developing media such as photos and videos (photographing and filming robots is super fun), running and monitoring marketing campaigns, planning events and tradeshows, developing collateral such as posters, brochures, and sales sheets, managing the website and online store, and developing compelling customer stories for our audience. We also attend various trade shows to meet with our customers face-to-face, learn about their needs, and get their impressions and feedback on new product development. If you don’t like doing the same thing every day, Clearpath is the place to work.

Q: What’s the most satisfying part of your role?

The most satisfying part of my role is being at the forefront of robotics research and development. It’s interesting to see how the research community uses our products, and seeing the technology evolve is satisfying.

Q: What do you look forward to when coming to work in the morning?

There isn’t one single thing that I look forward to when I come into work in the morning, but I do enjoy all the different projects that I get to work on with a group of super talented people.

Q: What are the must-have skills or knowledge for this role?

You need to be analytical, organized, have great communication skills, and have a creative edge. A huge part of marketing is being able to look at a large amount of data, such as web analytics and CRM data, and be able to analyze it.  Because no day here is the same, and we work on so many projects, you need to be very organized. Every good marketer needs to be able to communicate well and write a story. You also need to have a creative edge and be able to think outside of the box.

Q: What differentiates Clearpath from other companies?

What differentiates Clearpath from other companies is the culture that empowers you to try new ideas. It’s liberating to not be shackled down by processes and red tape that are so common in large corporate structures. I went from working for an “old-fashioned” company to working in start-up culture, and it was a bit of a shock at first. Some of it is still ingrained in me, but at the end of the day, too many processes slow things down. It’s start-up mentality to just get work done and work fast. There’s also the opportunity to wear multiple hats, which helps to get you out of your comfort zone and allows you to grow personally and professionally.

Q: What advice do you have for someone interested in applying to Clearpath?

The advice I have is to write a compelling cover letter and resume that demonstrates your past work and passion for what you do. Try to stand out from the rest. Be creative. Go above and beyond.

Q: What Clearpath value resonates with you the most?

The Clearpath value I identify with the most is to be humble. Don’t let your ego get in the way.  There is always something new to learn.

Q: How would you describe the diversity here at Clearpath?

Very diverse.  It’s a big part of the culture.  Diversity can be seen across all of the incredibly talented teams and departments here at Clearpath.

Q: Who is your favorite robot? And why?

My favourite robot would have to be Bender from Futurama because he’s hilarious.
